Central ‘sports hub’ location chosen for indoor fieldhouse

Buckingham area location positions indoor fieldhouse as central hub for sports, tourism, major events
A central, accessible site has been selected for the proposed multi-use indoor fieldhouse. The site is located east of Broadmoor Boulevard on Buckingham Drive, and is central to Millennium Place and Centennial Park, Bethel Transit Terminal, Emerald Hills Leisure Centre and Sally Stewart Regional Park.
“We’re excited to move forward with a location offering great synergies for a vibrant sports tourism and events hub,” says Mayor Frank.
The 18.3 acre site met the most criteria of three shortlisted, and best aligns with Strathcona County’s recreation and culture strategy focus areas: community needs, inclusion, building capacity, environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility.
The location was chosen for its accessibility by transit and parking design; proximity to other sports amenities, hospitality and accommodations, parks, open spaces and bike connections; potential for further development of outdoor amenities and park spaces in Sally Stewart Regional Park; and opportunity for facility expansion.
The vision for the facility is to be an intergenerational recreation and activity centre that supports the County’s vision of becoming Canada’s most livable community.
The Recreation and Culture Strategy was completed with significant public engagement prior to the first phase of the indoor fieldhouse planning process. The findings support the facility design in that indoor field space, gymnasium/court space, fitness tracks and multi-use program spaces were top development priorities for community recreation.
Project next steps include progressing with the design phase, determining final budget and bringing forward to Council for project funding approval, and continuing to explore partner opportunities.
