Collisions involving serious injuries
If there are serious injuries, call 9-1-1 immediately.
When do you need to report a collision?
In Alberta, you must report a collision if anyone is injured or if the combined property damage is more than $5,000. If the estimated damage is under $5,000, there are no injuries and the collision was not a hit-and-run, you do not need to report it.
If you are unsure of the value of damage to your vehicle, the other driver’s vehicle, or any other property involved, you may get a quote for repairs before reporting.
When can you report a collision online?
You can report single vehicle collisions online through the Government of Alberta's Report My Collision portal. The damage amount must be $5,000 or more.
Single vehicle collisions include:
your vehicle struck an animal
your vehicle struck an object (not another vehicle)
your vehicle ran off the road
your parked vehicle was involved in a hit and run with no witnesses or information available
When do you need to report a collision in person?
Collisions that must be reported in person to the police include one or more of the following criteria:
the total combined property damage cost for all parties exceeds $5,000
someone was injured in the collision
the collision involved a hit-and-run
If your collision occurred within Strathcona County, please come to the detachment at 911 Bison Way to report the collision at the front counter. Bring your driver’s license, insurance and the vehicle registration for the vehicle involved.
Collisions must be reported to the police responsible for the area where the crash occurred. For example, if you're a Strathcona County resident but your collision happened in downtown Edmonton as you were leaving work, you must report the collision to the Edmonton Police Service through an Edmonton Collision Reporting Centre.
