Types of checks

There are two types of checks you may require: a basic criminal record or a vulnerable sector check. In some circumstances, you may also need to supply fingerprints.

How to apply

Apply online

Online applications are for Strathcona County residents only.

To apply online, you must:

• be a Strathcona County resident

• be over the age of 18

• be able to pick up the results in person

• not require a certified criminal record check (fingerprint-based). Certified criminal record checks must be applied for in person.

After your application is processed, a staff member will contact you to inform you that your criminal record check is ready to pick up. Please bring your ID for pick up. Results cannot be sent electronically or mailed. No exceptions.

All online criminal record checks are charged an additional $9.95 processing fee plus applicable taxes.

Apply in person

To apply in person, visit the Strathcona County RCMP detachment at 911 Bison Way, Sherwood Park, Alberta, during business hours. The front counter is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on weekends and statutory holidays.

Fingerprinting services

Fingerprint services are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call 780-449-0100.

Available to:

• Strathcona County residents and

• anyone who lives within an RCMP-policed jurisdiction.

If your municipality is served by another police service, you must obtain fingerprinting services through the police agency responsible for your area. For example, Edmonton residents must go through Edmonton Police Service Fingerprinting Services.

Volunteer organizational letter requirements

If you are applying for a Criminal Record Check or Vulnerable Sector Check for a volunteer position, you must provide a letter from the organization to have the fee waived. The letter must be on official organization letterhead and include:

• the organization's name, address, phone number, and a signature from an authorized official

• the applicant’s full name

• a clear description of the volunteer role and if/how it involves the vulnerable sector (e.g., coach, chaperone)

• the type of check required (Criminal Record Check or Vulnerable Sector Check)

• a statement confirming the applicant is not paid

Vulnerable Sector Check

A Vulnerable Sector Check includes a Basic Criminal Record Check and additional screening related to record suspensions (pardons) for sexual offences. Employers and volunteer organizations may require a vulnerable sector check for positions involving vulnerable persons, such as children, seniors, medical patients and people with disabilities. Vulnerable sector checks must be processed by your local police service. As a result, the Strathcona County detachment can only process vulnerable sector checks for Strathcona County residents.
