2022 budget meeting begins

Strathcona County Council today received the introduction and overview presentation of the 2022 Recommended Multi-year Budget.

“The proposed budget maintains our excellent service levels, ensures proper upkeep of our capital investments, keeps user fees flat, and retains fiscal sustainability both in the short and long term,” says Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Cannon.

“As a starting point to budget meeting discussions, the 2022 budget proposes a 2.57 per cent tax revenue increase. This is a preliminary number that will be finalized through Council deliberations and budget approval,” adds Jennifer Cannon. “We’ve presented Council a budget that meets all of our base requirements and proposes other components that Council can adjust in their decision-making. This aims to achieve a balanced and fiscally responsible budget that maintains the County’s healthy financial position.”

Council budget deliberations, including County division and community partner budget presentations, begin on November 15 and continue November 26 through December 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9, as required.

On November 8 by 4 p.m., the full 2022 Recommended Multi-year Budget will be available to the public at strathcona.ca/agenda found under the November 15 budget meeting date.

Members of the public are invited to watch the continuous budget meeting, live or the recorded version, at strathcona.ca/webcasts

Residents are also invited to engage in the budget process and speak to Council at the Budget Public Hearing on November 26 at 4 p.m. To register to speak (virtually or in-person), residents may email LegislativeOfficer@strathcona.ca or call 780-464-8014. A resident may also add their name to the speaker's list at the public hearing if they are attending in person. Written submissions are also accepted for the public hearing until 12 noon on November 25 and will be distributed to Council.

The 2022 budget is expected to be approved in December, and the final municipal mill rate and Tax Rate Bylaw will be approved in the spring of 2022.
