WHEREAS sexual assault, sexual abuse and sexual violence affects every member of our community; whether they are a survivor, or their life has been affected by someone else’s experience with sexual violence; and

WHEREAS no one person, organization, agency or community can eliminate sexual violence on their own; we must work together as a community towards prevention; and

WHEREAS we must educate about respect and consent and develop supports and programs for those affected by sexual violence; and

WHEREAS we urge all residents of our community to learn more about sexual assault, abuse and violence and become involved in supporting those affected by these crimes and active participants in eliminating sexual violence; and

WHEREAS Strathcona County Council and SAFFRON Sexual Assault Centre are working together with a vision of creating a community free of sexual assault, sexual abuse and sexual violence and its negative impacts;

NOW THEREFORE I,Mayor Roxanne Carr, do hereby proclaim May 2017 as “Sexual Violence Awareness Month” in Strathcona County.
