Do you have previous census experience? A history of providing great customer service? An eye for detail?  

If so, Strathcona County is looking for you! 

We are currently recruiting 80 temporary census workers to join our team to assist us in conducting the 2024 municipal census. This is a great opportunity to work on a short-term project towards a clearly defined and achievable goal.  

Census workers will: 

  • Be available to work a variety of shifts as call centre workers, canvassers and enumerators from April 29 – June 23.
  • Receive direction from their Census Area Supervisor regarding all aspects of data collection.

Census worker qualifications

  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position – e.g. walking for long periods, working outdoors in a variety of conditions.
  • Able to read and understand maps.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communications skills.
  • Have access to a computer to complete a one-hour online census orientation.
  • Available to attend a two-hour in-person training session.
  • Experience using a tablet.
  • Previous census experience and customer service experience are considered assets but are not required.

Call centre workers

All call centre positions have been filled. The Census Team is still accepting applications for canvasser and enumerator positions. 

Census canvassers

Canvassers work in the field. They go door-to-door within an assigned area to drop off door hangers to households that have not yet completed the census. Canvassers access an address list and webmap using an iPad.

  • $0.50 per door hanger distributed in urban areas.
  • $0.75 per door hanger distributed in rural areas.
  • Rural canvassers will be paid mileage at the rate of $0.69 per kilometer (to an established maximum).
  • Note: preference will be given to applicants who are willing to work as enumerators.

Census enumerators

Enumerators work in the field. They go door-to-door within an assigned area to collect information from residents who have not yet completed the census. Enumerators access the online census survey, address list and webmap on an iPad.

  • $2.50 per household counted in urban areas.
  • $4.60 per household counted in rural areas.
  • $55 training payment for completing both the online and in-person training.
  • $55 completion bonus based on 95% completion of assigned area.
  • Rural enumerators will be paid mileage at the rate of $0.69 per kilometer (to an established maximum).

Complete the  Census worker application form (208.6 KB) . Print, and bring it in-person to the Census Office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.  

Applicants will meet with a census area supervisor for an interview. The application and interview process should take no longer than 30 minutes. We are located at:

Free surface parking is available. Please use the main entrance at the South side of the building (facing the apartments).
