Celebrate National Indigenous History Month this June

June is National Indigenous History Month, and everyone is welcome to celebrate the heritage, culture, history, resilience and achievements of Indigenous Peoples.

“National Indigenous History Month provides many opportunities to listen and learn from Indigenous voices which is vital to reconciliation,” says Mayor Rod Frank. “Strathcona County is dedicated to building relationships with Indigenous Peoples, and we are pleased to have many events in our community that recognize and celebrate meaningful and multifaceted Indigenous culture and traditions.”

Indigenous leaders and knowledge keepers will lead free events across Strathcona County throughout June. Events are open to a variety of ages and range from writing and art to a blanket exercise and story sharing. A special tea and bannock will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 19 at Broadmoor Lake Park picnic shelter from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. All are welcome to join for cultural performances and light refreshments.

“We’re deeply grateful to the Elders and knowledge keepers who are willing to work with the Library, sharing their traditions and wisdom with others,” says Sharon Siga, Director of Strathcona County Library. “Their generosity has enabled us to offer a rich spectrum of all-ages program opportunities to County residents this June.”

Opportunities for learning and reconciliation throughout the year are featured on the County’s Indigenous Connections webpage. New in 2025 is Strathcona County’s Shared Journey eNewsletter, an Indigenous-led eNewsletter that amplifies Indigenous voices and opportunities for sharing, healing, learning and gathering.

Residents can sign up for the eNewsletter and find event details for National Indigenous History Month activities at strathcona.ca/IndigenousConnections.

Strathcona County resides on Treaty Six territory, the traditional lands and gathering place for many Indigenous people, including the Nehiyawak, Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux, Denesuliné, Blackfoot and Métis since Time Immemorial.
