Strathcona County detachment welcomes new facility dog

Strathcona County RCMP and Enforcement Services is proud to announce the newest member of its team — Mickey, an accredited facility dog from the Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society (DWW).

DWW Mickey will spread paws-itivity and support mental health within the detachment. The 21-month-old golden Labrador is tasked with providing emotional support and comfort to police officers, peace officers, dispatch, administration staff and victim services.

“This initiative reflects the kind of thoughtful, people-first policing that makes our community stronger,” says Tom Sutton, Director of Strathcona County RCMP and Enforcement Services. “Whether offering comfort to a child in crisis or simply brightening someone’s day, DWW Mickey will be a source of comfort and connection for the officers, the support staff and the community we serve.”

DWW Mickey was trained for this role with the help of his whelping home, puppy raisers and advanced raisers.

"DWW Mickey has been trained to provide comfort and grounding through specific, purposeful tasks like anxiety interruption and deep pressure therapy. As an Accredited Facility Dog, he will be a pillar of strength and support for the officers he serves—offering calm in moments of stress and helping foster mental wellness within the department,” says Amanda Dubé, Dogs with Wings CEO. “Mickey’s happy-go-lucky nature, eagerness to engage and natural intuition make him the perfect fit for this role. Whether someone needs a quiet moment of connection or a reason to smile, Mickey has an incredible ability to show up just when he’s needed most."

DWW Mickey is the first facility dog to join the team at 911 Bison Way. With a calm presence and wagging tail, DWW Mickey will play a vital role in local policing.
