2024 municipal census shows continued growth

The count is in! Strathcona County’s population is on the rise, according to the 2024 municipal census results. The County’s population has grown by 3.5 per cent since 2022, bringing the total number of residents to 103,829 people. The County saw population increases of 3.5 per cent in urban areas (75,575 residents) and 3.3 per cent in rural areas (28,253 residents).

“The steady growth and high public satisfaction over the past two years is evidence that Strathcona County continues to be an attractive community, committed to municipal excellence and financial responsibility,” says Mayor Rod Frank. “Thank you to everyone who participated in the census. The data helps us better understand our community’s needs, so we can plan and deliver our services in ways residents value.”

In addition to population numbers collected throughout May and June of this year, the census collected other important information including dwelling statistics, length of residency, number of vehicles registered, household size and school support for election planning. Demographic information was also collected for each resident, including citizenship, gender, age, race/ethnicity, level of education and employment/student status.

The County introduced several new questions to learn about the prevalence and types of disabilities in the community, and the most common primary languages spoken at home. The data collected from these questions will help decision-makers better understand our residents’ unique needs.

This was the second census carried out through paperless collection using mobile tablets. Census workers used technology to track and manage daily collection progress, resulting in fewer repeat visits to each household when compared to the last census in 2022, and cost savings throughout the collection process.

Residents were encouraged to fill out their census online or through the phone-in option. The 2024 municipal census had an online/phone-in response rate of 78.4 per cent, a 2.4 per cent increase over the 2022 census.

The 2024 municipal census results summary report is now available at strathcona.ca/census. On October 31, a more detailed report will be available online, along with the County’s user-friendly census results mapping tool. The public may request data, including crosstabulations and geographic breakdowns, by emailing gismaps@strathcona.ca.
