A monument to Reconciliation in Strathcona County

Strathcona County is inviting Indigenous community voices to join a new project that will explore the idea and design of a Reconciliation monument in our community.

“Building a Reconciliation monument is an important step in the County’s Truth and Reconciliation journey and building relationships with Indigenous Peoples,” says Mayor Rod Frank. “I encourage all our Indigenous community members to share their thoughts to ensure the project outcomes are meaningful, appropriate and reflect Indigenous values.”

The County is working closely with Indigenous professionals, Elders and Knowledge Keepers who will help guide this work with the participation of our Indigenous community members and allies in culturally appropriate, respectful and safe ways.

Feedback will be collected primarily through keeoukaywin (“The Visiting Way”), which emphasizes the importance of interconnectedness between people and research, as it connects people through knowledge and solutions sharing.

In-person sharing circles take place Wednesday, August 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, August 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Strathcona County Community Centre. Online participation is open from August 6 to 20, 2024. Participants’ stories and details will not be shared outside the sharing circles.

Interested residents can sign up to join in person; residents who have accessibility challenges, may need transportation or are unable to attend in person are encouraged to contact the project team to discuss options including virtual participation.
