Municipal Election 2025: Candidate nominations can be filed starting January 2

In October 2025, Strathcona County will hold a municipal election for Mayor and eight Ward Councillors for the 2025 to 2029 Council term.

The local municipal Council is the order of government closest to the people. Those interested in running for Mayor or Councillor for Strathcona County can find information about becoming a candidate at strathcona.ca/election.

Nominations can be filed at the Election Office starting January 2, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon on nomination day.

Election day is currently slated for Monday, October 20, 2025 and nomination day September 22, 2025. Council is considering passing a bylaw to move election day to Saturday October 18, 2025. This change is being considered because the federal election is currently scheduled for the same day, October 20, which may impact voter turnout and election worker recruitment. If the bylaw passes, nomination day will be September 20, 2025. The decision to move election day will be made no later than April 29, 2025.

Booking an appointment in advance to file nomination papers is strongly encouraged. The required forms and instructions for filing will be available at strathcona.ca/election by December 20.

New for the 2025 election, prospective candidates are required to file a notice of intent to run (form available on the website) with the Election Office. The notice must be filed before accepting campaign contributions or incurring campaign expenses. Once your notice is processed, your name will be added to the register of candidates on Strathcona County’s website.

The Election Office is temporarily located on the 3rd Floor North Wing, Community Centre, 401 Festival Lane, Sherwood Park, AB. The mailing address is 2001 Sherwood Drive, Sherwood Park, AB, T8A 3W7.

Residents are encouraged to get involved in the democratic process and take part in shaping the County’s future. Running for office is one way to get involved.
