Commercial vehicle inspections support safer County roads

A recent safety operation inspected 66 commercial vehicles travelling through Strathcona County, and only 17 per cent passed the inspection.

“Hundreds of commercial vehicles use County roads every day, so their adherence to commercial vehicle requirements is vital to the safety of our roads and everyone using them,” says Inspector Vito DiSciglio, Manager of Enforcement Services.

Commercial vehicles transport goods and paying passengers and must follow provincial and federal regulations to operate legally. Officers and inspectors from Strathcona County Enforcement Services, the RCMP, Edmonton Police Service, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc and Flagstaff who are part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) participated in the inspection operation that ran from October 8 – 10, 2024.

During the operation, the inspectors issued 44 tickets and placed 40 vehicles out of service.

CVSA officers train annually to maintain their certification allowing them to inspect vehicles and operators for various safety requirements, such as:

  • Tire inflation
  • Secured cargo
  • Lighting (headlights, brakes, turn signals, etc.)
  • Emergency exits
  • Driver’s hours of service
  • Valid driver’s licence

Operators whose vehicles fail the inspection are required to make the necessary repairs and pay any fines. Fines can range from $324 for a minor infraction up to seizure if the inspectors determine the vehicle is unsafe for travel on the road. Vehicles that need attention must be repaired before the vehicle can go into service again.

“We don’t conduct inspections just to hand out fines,” says DiSciglio. “By identifying issues before they become problems, we can prevent potential accidents and help keep everyone travelling on our roads safe.”
