Introducing a new pet-friendly Active Pass membership: Active Paws

Strathcona County greatly values inclusiveness and accessibility in recreation, and it’s doggone time this was extended to furrier County dwellers through a new Active Paws membership.

Since its inception in April 2022, the Active Pass has provided people with an affordable way to enjoy a wide variety of activities within the County’s recreation facilities. While it has been pawsitively received, some facility visitors feel sad leaving their pets at home while they enjoy their Active Pass. The Active Paws allows pets to enjoy their own monthly membership and includes access to unique activities such as Deep-water Doggy Paddle, Throw-a-Stick & Skate (minus the skate) and Kitten Worx. Group fitness activities are led by certified Golden Retrievers trained in professional fetch and furst aid.

While researching Active Paws membership inclusions, three furry residents were recruited for activity testing: Rick Bug, Luna VanKleek and Misha McKay. Video evidence of their escapades was captured at Glen Allan Recreation Complex and Ardrossan Recreation Complex.

Mayor Rod Frank’s compawnion, Kingston, was also a key steakholder and was made available to Strathcona County administration for an interview to provide insight into the process:

“Ruff ruff ruff. Ruff ruff, ruff ruff ruff ruff. Ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff; ruff ruff ruff, ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff,” stated Kingston.

Active Paws memberships are available for purrchase until 11:59 p.m. on April 1 for a cost of 9 bones, and are aligned with new recreation facility admission fees. Pets may also exchange the following in-demand toys for an Active Paws:

  • One pull-rope
  • Two branches, extra bark preferred
  • Three catnip leaves
  • Four tennis balls
Please note: squeaky toys are not accepted at facilities due to excessive noise complaints during product testing.

Strathcona County wishes residents a happy April Fool’s Day! While pets are not permitted in recreation facilities, there are many outdoor off-leash areas available to enjoy with furry family members. Kingston would also like to remind residents about the March 31 deadline for dog licence renewals (strathcona.ca/doglicence) – hurry to renew your dog’s bling to ensure your best furry friend can be returned home if they get lost.
