Strathcona County scales back New Year’s Eve Festival celebrations

With an emphasis on resident safety, Strathcona County has reduced the scope of New Year’s Eve Festival activities on December 31. Residents can still enjoy the fireworks display at 8 p.m., while all other interactive activities have been cancelled.

The safety of our staff and residents is a priority for Strathcona County. This difficult decision was made in response to both the rising risk of the Omicron variant in Alberta, and the forecasted inclement weather conditions from Environment Canada.

Residents are encouraged to view the fireworks display from their vehicles at various parking lots surrounding Broadmoor Lake Park:

  • Kinsmen Leisure Centre
  • Sherwood Park Arena and Sports Centre
  • Festival Place
  • St.Theresa School

Outdoor viewing of the fireworks is available within Broadmoor Lake Park with two-metre physical distancing being maintained between households at all times. Washrooms are available between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the Sherwood Park Arena; this facility is for washroom use only, gathering inside is not permitted.

Please note that transit bus shuttle service is no longer available for the event, and adjustments have been made to road closures in the area. Residents can also pick up edible art kits from Millennium Place and Glen Allan Recreation Complex between December 29 and 31 (while supplies last). Please follow all REP guidelines when visiting indoor facilities.
