Strathcona County-Fort Saskatchewan alliance agreement report published online

In September 2018, the City of Fort Saskatchewan and Strathcona County signed the Alliance Exploration Agreement which included a negotiated annexation and a joint commitment to undertake a study to further explore collaboration.

Fort Saskatchewan and Strathcona County share a border and many common interests including economic development and the resource industry. Together, they work within the Intermunicipal Relations Committee (IMRC) which strengthens their working relationship and focuses on collaboration strategies to help create a strong sub-region.

The IMRC and its working group managed the alliance exploration study which examined additional collaborative opportunities in services and service delivery, finances and taxes, growth and quality of life, sub-regional pressures, history and identity and political context across a spectrum of collaborative governance models.

The municipalities jointly engaged consulting teams from MNP, Tantus Solutions Group and Dentons. The work was partially funded by a Government of Alberta grant of $200,000, and the municipalities shared equally the balance of the costs, for a total cost of just over $400,000.

The final report from the study provides information and analysis through case studies, research and data specific to Fort Saskatchewan and Strathcona County, and provides the foundation for further work by both. Intermunicipal meetings continue to pursue opportunities that will benefit both communities and their residents.

The full report is now available on both municipal websites at strathcona.ca/alliance and fortsask.ca/reports.
