Strathcona County and regional partners conduct major commercial vehicle inspection operation

A recent commercial vehicle safety operation inspected 195 commercial vehicles travelling through Strathcona County—with 33 per cent passing inspection.

Commercial vehicles transport goods and paying passengers and must follow provincial and federal regulations to operate legally. Peace officers and inspectors from Strathcona County Enforcement Services, the RCMP, Edmonton Police Service, Alberta Sheriffs, City of Fort Saskatchewan, Lacombe County, Red Deer County, the City of Beaumont, and Alberta Transportation, who are part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), participated in the operation that ran from June 3-5, 2025, in Strathcona County.

“Commercial vehicle inspections play a key role in protecting infrastructure and promoting traffic safety. Ensuring vehicles meet the standards set by the National Safety Code and the Alberta Traffic Safety Act helps protect everyone who travels through our County,” said Sgt. Evan Brown with Enforcement Services.

During the operation, the inspectors noted 592 safety violations, issued 55 tickets and placed 78 vehicles out of service.

CVSA officers train annually to maintain their certification, allowing them to inspect vehicles and operators for various safety requirements, such as:

  • Tire inflation
  • Secured cargo
  • Lighting (headlights, brakes, turn signals, etc.)
  • Brake systems
  • Driver’s hours of service
  • Valid driver’s licence

Operators whose vehicles fail the inspection are required to make the necessary repairs and pay any fines. Fines can range from $324 for a minor infraction up to seizure if the inspectors determine the vehicle is unsafe for travel on the road. Vehicles that need attention must be repaired before the vehicle can go into service again.
