New rail overpass supports residential, commercial and industrial growth
October 30, 2023

No waiting for a train to pass—our current and future residents will be thankful.
Expected to open to public traffic the week of November 6, a new overpass over the CN Rail tracks on Range Road 231 north of Highway 16 will enhance connection between Sherwood Park and the new Cambrian Crossing development area.
Strathcona County, Rohit Communities and Mattamy Homes worked in partnership to build the new rail overpass. The developers covered the majority of the $40.55 million overall project costs, including consulting fees and utility relocations to establish the Cambrian (Rohit Communities) and Hearthstone (Mattamy Homes) neighbourhoods in Cambrian Crossing.
“This project is a prime example of how successful partnerships can promote innovation and help us grow,” says Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank. “It supports an effective and accessible transportation network - integral to a safe, healthy community and strong economy.”
Located north of Highway 16 and west of Highway 21, Cambrian Crossing encompasses about 365 hectares of land and is projected to include 5,355 households (about 12,600 people) once development is complete.
“We are excited to watch the further development of Cambrian Crossing,” says Mayor Frank. “We look forward to welcoming residents to this new, leading edge sustainable community.”
Cambrian Crossing will be uniquely integrated for living, working, learning, playing and relaxing. Inspired by rural roots, it will consist of mixed uses and a broad range of residential options that will be attractive to people at all stages of life, from first-time home buyers to seniors looking to downsize.
Cambrian Crossing is located on the doorstep of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, in a unique setting where major transportation routes intersect, providing an accessible site for future businesses and residents.
The Range Road 231 overpass project was designed by Stantec Consulting, constructed by PCL Construction and project managed by Strathcona County. It is the largest transportation construction project the County has ever undertaken.
