Being and becoming: a journey of self and community at Gallery@501 Image from Being and Becoming, an exhibition by artists Garfield Morgan and Tere Cuellar

Strathcona County is pleased to present Being and Becoming, a new exhibition by Edmonton artists Garfield Morgan and Tere Cuellar. The exhibit opens at Gallery@501 on January 15, 2026, and shows until February 28, 2026.

Being and Becoming offers a powerful reflection on the search for self. Through exploration of concepts of identity, heritage, resistance, acceptance, and observation, both artists invite viewers to consider the evolving nature of identity and community.

Garfield Morgan blends vibrant African wax fabrics with traditional Yoruba imagery and contemporary painting techniques. His portraits depict confident Black/African individuals, challenging stereotypes and celebrating resilience and beauty. Through dynamic color, rhythm, and texture, Morgan creates works that affirm identity and invite reflection on an ever-evolving journey of becoming.

Tere Cuellar uses painting as a method of knowledge, expressing concepts of resistance and acceptance rooted in memory and lived experience. Her contemporary oil portraits and figurative works explore vulnerability, compassion, and healing. Through expressive hands, nuanced facial gestures, and rich contrasts of color and tone, Cuellar’s art speaks to self-acceptance and the complexity of human emotion.

"This exhibition invites us to see portraiture not just as representation, but as an important dialogue about who we are and who we are becoming." says Kris Miller, Acting Manager, Cultural Services.

Visitors can engage in a hands-on drawing activity in the exhibit, further exploring identity and portraiture.

Join us for a special artist talk and reception with Garfield Morgan and Tere Cuellar on Saturday, January 24 at 1 p.m. at Gallery@501 (#120, 501 Festival Avenue). This event and admission to the gallery are free.
