Strathcona County celebrates the voices behind 9-1-1

Emergency Communications Operators in Emergency Services and Telecommunications Operators in RCMP and Enforcement Services play a crucial role in maintaining community safety. These professionals handle unexpected situations daily, often under high-stress conditions.

“Callers to our 9-1-1 centres are supported with care and compassion. Our staff are the first voices people hear when they call 9-1-1. These professionals play a critical role in assisting callers until other first responders arrive on scene. We are very proud and grateful for the service they provide,” says Mayor Rod Frank.

The Emergency Communications Centre in Emergency Services is designated as a Public Safety Answering Point, providing 9-1-1 call answer and fire dispatch services for numerous communities across Alberta.

“Our staff are the first, first-responders. Their unwavering dedication, calm under pressure and commitment to serving our community are truly commendable,” says Deputy Chief, Strategic Services Dawn Nash. “These unsung heroes work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that help is always just a call away."

The Municipal Operations Communications Centre within the RCMP and Enforcement Services department provides the essential service of answering emergency calls for our local RCMP as well as calls to the 24-hour non-emergency complaint line (780-467-7741).

“Working around the clock, our operators have the vital role of listening and providing valuable information to both the caller and those responding,” says Derek Stankey,

Manager of RCMP Operations Support. “We are very fortunate to have a team of compassionate and professional individuals providing this service.”

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is held annually during the second week of April, celebrating the vital contributions of these unsung heroes.
