“The opportunity to connect with and learn from two very diverse exhibits is a unique experience,” says Kris Miller, Gallery@501 curator. “There are many threads in both stories that remind us of how interconnected life is.”
In “Translations of Han,” mihyun maria kim reflects on the notion of “han,” an untranslatable Korean affect associated with historical unresolved grief. Visitors will witness generational impacts from experiences of war, displacement, poverty, loss of collective identity and family divide. A quiet, immersive space which includes an interactive area provides visitors with the opportunity to reflect on feelings evoked by the work.
“Sacred Patterns” is a collection of paintings inspired by the patterns and colours in nature by local artist Jessica Desmoulin. Working intuitively, Desmoulin paints animals, birds and aquatic life in a Woodland style that emphasizes outlined shapes and flowing lines and reflects her family and loved ones. She finds connection and spiritual guidance in the imagery and creates a feeling of rhythm and healing in her work. Desmoulin is represented by the Bearclaw Gallery in Edmonton.
mihyun maria kim's exhibit includes inherited objects, installations, photographs, video, sound, fabric, poetry and mixed media pieces, and she will activate part of her work through performance at the public reception. The artist would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
Join the artists for a free public reception at Gallery@501 on Thursday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m. Visit the exhibits at Gallery@501 for free from Tuesday, August 20 until Saturday, October 5, 2024.
