WHEREAS Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017; and

WHEREAS Strathcona County celebrates a rich history that is manifest in its museum and archives, historic sites and cultural landscapes, and also traditional practices and intangible cultural heritage; and

WHEREAS these assets are a source of invaluable information about the history of our community and country, and stories about them provide a vital legacy to guide and nurture future generations; and

WHEREAS stories about the past strengthen our community’s unique identity and foster a sense of place; and

WHEREAS ‘National Heritage Week’ is recognized by the National Trust for Canada as a time to reflect on the stories around the theme ‘My Canada’;

NOW THEREFORE     I, Mayor Roxanne Carr, do hereby proclaim February 20 to 26, 2017 ‘National Heritage Week’ in Strathcona County and call upon citizens to join fellow Canadians to learn about local cultural, natural and intangible cultural heritage, and to share stories that celebrate Canada alongside the distinct local history and heritage found here in our community.
