WHEREAS research shows that parents have a strong influence on the development of literacy in their children; and

WHEREAS reading opens doors to discovery and provides unlimited opportunities for adventure, enjoyment and learning for people of all ages; and

WHEREAS family learning helps maintain the literacy levels of adults and encourages the development of lifelong readers and learners; and

WHEREAS solid literacy skills are vital to our community’s economic and social development;

NOW THEREFORE I, Mayor Roxanne Carr, do hereby proclaim January 27, 2017 as “Family Literacy Day” in Strathcona County.
