Job Description

The Budget Coordinator supports organization-wide budget development and is responsible for coordinating the collaborative creation of Strathcona County’s rolling multi-year operating and capital budgets. This position delivers comprehensive financial analysis that supports strategic alignment and drives predictive decision making. The role evaluates complex financial information and provides substantiated recommendations to the Financial Planning branch and management to support corporate budgeting and long-term planning processes which help inform recommendations to Executive Team and Council. The role also prepares detailed budget reports for internal and external stakeholders, stays informed on five-year budget initiatives, and regularly participates in budget meetings.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Support the development and consolidation of departmental multi-year operating and capital budget submissions, ensuring accuracy and consistency
  • Support analysis and compilation of departmental budget submissions for alignment with strategic goals and operational objectives, resolving inconsistencies where necessary
  • Coordinate the development and approval of budget amendments including report preparation to support decision making
  • Administration of corporate budget applications including requests, enhancements, and process stability
  • Support funding projects for multi-year operating and capital budgets and advising budget owners on available funding sources through the business case intake process
  • Lead the annual update and review of the fees, rates and charges schedule and bylaw by developing departmental worksheets and instructions, reviewing submissions, resolving issues, and consolidating updates
  • Supports financial planning and budget development by administering operating budget change requests, salary and benefit data, and budget amendments in compliance with provincial legislation and defined timelines
  • Communicate operating and capital budget guidelines and procedures, providing training, technical support and troubleshooting for the corporate budget application 
  • Support all levels of the organization in budget development by advising and making recommendations to budget owners


Qualifications and Skills:


  • Completion of a related degree and three years of directly related budgeting experience, preferably in a municipal environment
  • A professional accounting designation (CPA) completed or in progress would be considered an asset
  • Understanding of PSAS (Public Sector Accounting Standards) 
  • A strong understanding of current regional budget impacts and issues and the ability to translate complex financial data into accessible insights that support forward-looking decision-making across the organization
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to present complex financial content in a clear and accessible way 
  • Effective communication skills to liaise between branches and support cross-functional coordination throughout the organization
  • Ability to foster a culture of customer service excellence by providing informed and actionable financial and business advice to departments
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including technical competency to work with financial information/integrated ERP systems and software
