METRO MAYORS ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES INDEPENDENT ADVISORY PANEL ON METRO EDMONTON’S FUTURE

September 16, 2015

EDMONTON – Nine Edmonton Metro Region Mayors have named an independent panel of recognized community leaders to provide them with advice on how to optimize the region’s attributes in the coming decades.

“The capital region board has made a lot of progress on regional collaboration, as a supporter of the work of the CRB, I would say it has opened a window of opportunity to set the direction for the future,” said Greg Krishke, Mayor, City of Leduc. “Our group of nine Mayors have formed another positive alliance to look at how our metro area can work together to leverage its strengths and address key challenges over the next 30-50 years.”

The Metro Mayors Alliance consists of nine regional Mayors: Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, City of Edmonton, Leduc County, City of Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, Parkland County, Spruce Grove and St. Albert.  These nine municipalities represent 95 percent of the region’s population and 96 percent of its assessment base.

“As metro Mayors it is incumbent on us to work together to get ahead of the challenges and maximize the opportunities we face as a metro region,” said Tom Flynn, Mayor, and Sturgeon County. “By finding new ways to think, act and plan as a metro area, everyone across the region can benefit.”

The Mayors have named an independent Advisory Panel on Metro Edmonton’s Future to consult with experts and develop constructive recommendations that will position the metro region to be globally competitive, while providing a high quality of life for citizens across the region. The Panel will provide its final report and recommendations to the Mayors and public by the Spring of 2016.

There are 12 panel members and they are tasked with broad strategic questions considering how metro governments can affect change and collaborate with each other and with others - including the province - for success.  The Panel will explore strategic questions such as:

  • Is a globally competitive Edmonton Metro Region achievable? What does success look like?
  • What are the success factors and what is required to get there?
  • What needs to be different to achieve results?

“These Mayors have assembled a diverse and experienced panel of leaders who represent a variety of sectors,” said Don Lowry, Panel Chair. “I look forward to working together with my highly qualified colleagues to put forward our report and recommendations.  The Mayors have asked us to be future focused, frank and thought provoking, and I am confident we are up to their challenge.”
