In 2021-22, a community engagement was held in Strathcona County to understand challenges and opportunities related to supporting community safety and well-being in our community. The findings of the engagement were an important part of the evidence base used in development of the Strathcona County Community Safety and Well-being (CSWB) Strategy. A key finding of the engagement was that community members were concerned about growing challenges some seniors were experiencing meeting their basic needs, such as food, because of an increasing cost of living. As well, concern was expressed about social isolation of some groups of seniors, including some older seniors with complex needs. The work of the Sherwood Care Hot Meals on Wheels program has important impacts for seniors, supporting both their need for affordable, nutritious meals and for connection.
Up to 75 older adult families a week in Strathcona County receive warm, healthy meals that are delivered by a team of committed volunteers who donate both their time and the gas required to make their deliveries. Each volunteer consistently delivers to the same households and builds relationships with the seniors receiving meals, breaking down social isolation and contributing to their feelings of connection to their community. Volunteers also keep an eye on the wellness of recipients and help to connect seniors to other supports that they might need.Â
Due to the evolving nature of seniors’ health status, as individuals receiving meals are transitioned to other modes of care/support (supportive living, long term care, etc.) there are ongoing additions of new families receiving the service. Between March-September of 2023, 50 new families began to receive meals through Meals on Wheels, demonstrating that there is a growing need for the type of support provided by the program. As Strathcona County’s population of older adults continues to grow, programs like Hot Meals on Wheels will play an increasingly important role in keeping seniors in our community connected and well. Â
