In 2023, improvements were made to the Highway 21 and Township Road 534 intersection to support projected increases in traffic from residential developments in the area.
This project was completed as part of the overall North of Yellowhead Upgrades project.  It was led by Strathcona County and funded by the Cambrian Crossing developers.
Upgrades include:
Traffic signals were added to the intersection to support subdivision requirements for Cambrian Crossing, a new residential development area north of Highway 16 and west of Highway 21. Â
The project will be complete by summer of 2024, with the signals operational by February. Â
When warranted by traffic volumes, an interchange will eventually be constructed at this location. These discussions and negotiations between the County and the Alberta government have been ongoing since 2012-13, as part of the approval of the initial North of Yellowhead Area Concept Plan, which includes development of the Bremner area.Â
The addition of traffic signals was required to support development of Cambrian Crossing, a new residential development area north of Highway 16 and west of Highway 21. Cambrian Crossing and Bremner are two separate developments on either side of Highway 21.
However, as future development of the area progresses, including Bremner, the province's long-term plan for Highway 16 involves removing all existing accesses between Highway 21 and Range Road 210 and replacing them with interchanges at key locations.
The tentative locations for future interchanges are Range Road 222, Highway 830, and Range Road 211, but this is subject to change. As part of the Area Concept Plan for Bremner, an additional interchange is expected near Range Road 224 and a partial interchange at Range Road 223. These are yet to be confirmed.
Traffic volumes on Range Roads 224 and 225 are a small percentage of the overall volume on Highway 21 and Highway 16, and the new signals will manage any additional traffic from this area.
