Strathcona County’s municipal election is taking place in October 2025. Being a part of the election is a rewarding way to participate firsthand in our local democracy and serve a critically important role for the community.   

Available opportunities:  

  • Advance vote: multiple day role with shifts scheduled between October 6-18  
  • Election day: multiple positions working 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. on October 20 
  • Election night (NEW): Ballot Counters are needed starting at 7:30 p.m. on October 20

Presiding Deputy

The Presiding Deputy supervises the election workers in the voting station and is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of voting activities. 

The Presiding Deputy ensures election workers follow procedures set out in the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA).   

Position overview: 

  • Collects voting station supplies at the Election Office. 
  • Leads the set-up of the voting station.
  • Allocates and distribute supplies to election workers at the voting station before the polls open for the day.
  • Supervises election workers in the voting station and ensures that the voting process runs smoothly.
  • Liaises with Election Central, candidates, election officials, scrutineers and facility representatives.
  • Closes the voting station and completes the required paperwork. 

Qualifications:  

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have previous experience working an election.
  • Have excellent attention to detail and interpersonal skills. 
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Have knowledge of election processes and the County’s ward structure. 
  • Be able to locate residential addresses using maps and technology. 
  • Have experience working with a laptop.
  • Have supervisory experience.  

Requirements:   

  • Must have access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance and a valid Driver’s Licence.   
  • Vehicle must be large enough to transport all voting station supplies.
  • Must have a personal cell phone available to use on election day. 
  • Must be physically able to lift supplies weighing up to 30-50 lbs. 
  • Applicants will be required to complete an in-person interview to determine position suitability.  
  • Must complete 3-hour in-person training.

Assistant Presiding Deputy

The Assistant Presiding Deputy assists the Presiding Deputy with supervising the election workers in the voting station and is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of voting activities.   

The Assistant Presiding Deputy assumes all duties of the Presiding Deputy in their absence and ensures election workers are following procedures set out in the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA).   

Position overview:  

  • Provides brief training and instruction to any election workers that did not attend an in-person training session.
  • Assists with setting-up and closing the voting station. 
  • Allocates and distribute supplies to election workers at the voting station before the polls open for the day. 
  • Supervises election workers, under the direction of the Presiding Deputy, in the voting station and ensures that the voting process runs smoothly.
  • Liaises with Election Central, candidates, election officials, scrutineers and facility representatives.
  • Covers breaks for election workers throughout the day. 

Qualifications:  

  • Be at least 16 years of age. 
  • Have previous experience working an election.
  • Have excellent attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have knowledge of election processes and the County’s ward structure.
  • Be able to locate residential addresses using maps and technology.

Ballot Clerk

The Ballot Clerk ensures ballots are kept safe and secure while accurately issuing ballots for Mayor, Councillor and school Trustee to each voter.    

Position overview: 

  • Assists with setting-up and closing the voting station.
  • Ensures the security of the ballots in their possession during the shift.
  • Issues the correct ballots to each voter for Mayor, Councillor and school Trustee (Catholic or public) as instructed by the Registration Clerk.
  • Completes all documentation and worksheets for ballot accounting.
  • Other duties as requested by the Presiding Deputy.  

Qualifications: 

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have previous experience working an election.
  • Have excellent attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have mathematical skills and be comfortable working with numbers.
  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Be able to sit for a long period of time on election day.

Ballot Box Attendant

The Ballot Box Attendant provides safekeeping of the ballot boxes and ensures the integrity of votes by overseeing voters depositing completed ballots in the correct boxes. 

Position overview: 

  • Assists with setting-up and closing the voting station. 
  • Ensures voters deposit their ballots into the correct ballot boxes.
  • Maintains an accurate tally of the number of voters who have cast ballots.
  • Confirms throughout the day that the number of voters processed matches the number of voters processed by the Registration and Ballot Clerks.
  • Switches out ballots boxes as needed when they reach capacity.
  • Other duties as requested by the Presiding Deputy.

Registration Clerk

The Registration Clerk is responsible for checking voter ID and completing the required forms to confirm eligibility. 

Position overview: 

  • Assists with setting-up and closing the voting station.
  • Accurately records those who have voted and assign voter numbers.
  • Confirms which type of school board trustee ballot the voter requires.
  • Communicates required ballots for each voter to the Ballot Clerk
  • Communicates instructions to the voter on voting procedures.
  • Other duties as requested by the Presiding Deputy.  

Qualifications: 

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have previous experience working an election.
  • Have excellent attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have experience with working with a laptop (advance vote only).
  • Previous experience as an election worker is an asset. 

Requirements:  

  • Must complete 2-hour in-person training for election day positions, 3-hour in-person training for advance vote positions.

Address Clerk

Using physical maps and technology the Address Clerk searches the voters’ address to confirm they are in the correct voting station and ensure they receive the correct ballots. 

Position overview: 

  • Assists with setting-up and closing the voting station.
  • Identifies the correct ballots for each voter based on their address (advance vote only).
  • Identifies voters’ assigned voting station using technology and/or maps (election day only).
  • Directs voters to the correct voting station as needed (election day only).
  • Provides voters the information for their assigned polling station if a voter is in the incorrect polling station (election day only).
  • Other duties that may be assigned by the Presiding Deputy.

Door Attendant

The Door Attendant welcomes voters to the voting station, directs them to the correct areas of the voting station, and monitors the entrances and exits.

Position overview: 

  • Assists with the set-up and closing of the voting station.
  • Posts signs around the voting station.
  • Aiding voters as needed.
  • Greets and welcomes voters to the polling station aiding voters when required.
  • Directs electors in and out of the voting station.
  • Other duties as required by the Presiding Deputy. 

Qualifications: 

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort in working with people.
  • Previous election experience is an asset.   

Requirements:  

  • Ability to stand and/or walk for duration of the shift.
  • Training will be provided at voting station at start of shift.

Ballot Counter

The Ballot Counter accurately counts all votes cast for the Mayor, Councillors and school Trustees at their assigned location.

Position overview: 

  • Counts ballots at their assigned voting station location or at the counting centre.
  • Completes ballot counting worksheets.
  • Packs up ballots once count is completed.

Qualifications

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have excellent attention to detail.
  • Previous election experience is an asset.

Requirements: 

  • Must be able to sit/stand and perform the same task for a long period of time.
  • This role requires an in-person interview and 2-hour in-person training.
