Upcycling is a great way to give items you no longer use a new purpose!

How to make a sweater pillow

  1. Search your closet for an old sweater or head to the local thrift store and find a soft cozy sweater you will love.
  2. Find a pillow you can reuse (doesn’t have to be pretty!)
  3. Lay the pillow on top of the sweater and cut across the top. Make sure you leave about 4” above the pillow before you cut (I didn’t do this and it was trickier)
  4. You will now have a sweater tube. Flip it inside out and make sure the openings meet up and are flat.
  5. Meet your new best friend, fusible fabric tape! Pick it up at any fabric store or even some box stores. When heated with a steam iron it acts like glue.

Place a piece in between the two sides on the edge that you cut. Iron over it using the steam setting.
  6. Flip the sweater inside out. Now you have a sweater pillow case.
  7. Find some fun buttons and thin ribbon. Push the ribbon through the sweater with scissors and tie in a bow to attach the button. This is a great way to do it because you don’t need to know how to sew, and you to take the cover off and wash it if you need to.
  8. All done!

Meet the crafter!

Erin is our department crafter. She is always on the search for easy and creative ways to upcycle items. As a busy mom of two, she knows the importance of reducing our impact on the environment.
