Youth programs fully embrace the concept of physical literacy and strive to promote it in all program offerings. We support the Canadian Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development Model which allows us to align our programs and age groupings with participant’s developmental abilities. In turn, fostering a positive recreational environment that encourages successful skill development and confidence building.
The International Physical Literacy Association defines physical literacy as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engaging in physical activities for life.
Fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, etc. in conjunction with the ABC’S (agility, balance, coordination and speed) of movement is the foundation of physical literacy.
These skills are learned through a combination of structured and unstructured activities that take place in multiple environments such as water, land, ice, etc.
Physical literacy promotes and encourages a lifelong, active and healthy lifestyle. Research illustrates that if one does not develop physical literacy early on in life it leads to frustration and withdrawal from participation in sport and recreational activities.
