Climate change is occurring on a global scale, affecting our local climate and weather patterns. This is leading to greater severity and frequency of extreme weather events such as drought, wildfire, heavy rainfall, high winds and localized flooding events.
These hazards have major implications for municipalities, impacting the natural environment, infrastructure and human health.Â
Through a new corporate Climate Resilience Plan (5.5Â MB) , Strathcona County is looking to do its part to adapt to local climate impacts.
Strathcona County's Climate Resilience Plan contains 13 broad objectives, aimed at building resilience and adapting to local climate impacts, under four themes:
Resilience-building actions support each objective to prepare Strathcona County as an organization to contend with and adapt to the local impacts of climate change.
Implementation will be guided by the Climate Resilience Plan's vision:
"Strathcona County is responding to the challenges of climate change so we can remain an inclusive, healthy and resilient place to live for generations to come."
This plan was made possible by grant funding provided by the Government of Alberta, through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre's Climate Resilience Capacity Building Program. The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the Government of Alberta.
