A community garden close to home helps to strengthen ties between neighbours and build skills to grow foodÂ
A space for people of all ages and gardening skill levels, the Woodlake Court Neighbourhood Garden has helped improve the sense of community among neighbours. Donna Reimche has been part of the Woodlake Court Neighbourhood Garden since it began in 2017.
Situated on an island in the middle of the cul-de-sac, the garden began to improve the usage of the land. Donna has found that having the garden close by has increased the sense of belonging among the neighbours as people visit with one another while tending their plots. Those who use the garden’s seven plots range in age from young families to seniors in their nineties.
For many who participate in the community garden, this was their first time growing produce. For some, it’s sparked a love of gardening that has encouraged them to grow more in their backyards or on other plots of land in the area. After participating for many years, the Woodlake Court Neighbourhood Garden continues to be a source of pride for Reimche as a place to gather with neighbours.Â
