This posting is for 1 hourly position for up to 7 months
The Equipment Operator I with Park Development contributes to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational areas by safely operating a variety of equipment, performing manual labour and training other staff in the safe operation of equipment. This position is based out of Strathcona Athletic Park and the work is performed in the area of Park Development within Strathcona County.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform inspections of playgrounds, courts, skate/bmx parks, spray parks, hockey rinks, etc.
- Assist with park construction and maintenance, fence maintenance and painting, boardwalks and bridges, and graffiti removal and other duties
- Monitors, maintains and services equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
- Uses and shares knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations and Code, follows safety guidelines, identifies potential hazardous situations and adapts appropriately
- Assists Equipment Operator II and Team Lead positions by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment used in park operations
- Displays accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with two years related experience in outdoor operations
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to maintain mental alertness while performing duties often with frequent interruptions and under time constraints; unscheduled overtime may be required
- Experience operating trucks, trailers, and/or small equipment and engines
- Supervisory experience is an asset
- Current WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certifications are an asset
- Ability to adapt to new and changing situations, combined with initiative and responsibility
- Knowledge of County recreation areas and of safe operating procedures
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of related equipment and tools
Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Current First Aid and CPR certification required prior to start date
- Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
- Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions
