Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club is Strathcona County's premiere aquatic program, offering youth a comprehensive and exciting aquatic alternative. The club features a Junior and Senior option, providing lifesaving and lifeguarding education to youth ages 8-17 years old. Built on the four pillars of knowledge, leadership, wellness, and fun, Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club develops our community's young leaders and future aquatic instructors and lifeguards. Levels are designed by age to allow club members to complete courses/certifications while moving club members through the club, so they face no gaps in age, certification or hiring time. They'll be ready to apply at 16 years old as a lifeguard and/or aquatic instructor - no other courses are necessarily required.
The Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club includes a variety of fun and exciting extras to make being part of the club one of the best decisions you’ll make all year. From special member opportunities to wide games, parties, and leadership development, you won’t regret spending your Sunday nights with teens and coaches who share similar goals and who take a personal interest in you.
Registration will open on August 19 at 7 a.m. for new members.
The Junior Club starts kids on the path to becoming a lifeguard, while having a whole lot of fun along the way. Over the course of the five levels, members will challenge a variety of Lifesaving Society programs, including the Swim Patrol family and Bronze family of awards.
In addition to formal programming, Junior Club members participate in lifeguard sport competitions, wide games, pool parties, special events, leadership development and wellness programs. If you want the opportunity to feel part of a special community of kids and learn some valuable skills from week to week, then the Tidal Waves Junior Club is the place for you!
If you want to work towards becoming an Aquatic Instructor or Lifeguard, this is your one-stop opportunity to take all of your required training over the course of three years. Each level helps members develop and build practical skills and receive specialized training in core courses such as:
The Tidal Waves Senior Club includes a variety of fun and exciting extras to make being part of the club one of the best decisions you’ll make all year. From special member opportunities to wide games, parties, mock hirings, and leadership development, you won’t regret spending your Sunday nights with teens and coaches who share similar goals and who take a personal interest in you.
Registration for Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club will be available to existing members in July, following the end of each Club season.
New member registration opens August 19, 2025 with Fall Swimming programs.
Technically, no. However, due to the swimming requirements in club levels and certification swim requirements, we strongly recommend having taken some swimming lessons prior to joining either club. If you are concerned, or unsure, please contact us. Depending on which level your child would join, we can provide a more specific swim ability recommendation.
Most weeks, Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club programs run out of the Emerald Hills Leisure Centre, located at 3555 Emerald Drive, Sherwood Park, AB, T8H 0W6. Special events may be booked offsite and can be found on our Trumba calendar or through the club e-Newsletter.
Facility parking is available at the Emerald Hills Leisure Centre, but many of our families drop off and pick up their children at program start and end times. We ask that parents help keep our kids safe by parking in a designated stall to drop-off/pick-up. This avoids congestion in the drop-off lane directly in front of the facility as kids and guests enter and exit the facility.
The Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club season runs from September to June, following the school calendar. Clubs will operate most weekends throughout the season, with omit days on major holiday weekends and over a session break in the holiday season.
Yes! While we can only accommodate a specific range of members, Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club has the most flexibility to add space of any other Swimming & Water Safety program in Strathcona County.
The Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club operates differently from many other lifeguard clubs in that it does not have a competitive mandate.
The Tidal Waves Lifeguard Club focuses on knowledge acquisition, leadership development, individual wellness, and a whole lot of fun. While competitive Lifeguarding Sport events will be part of the Lifeguard Club season, we do not currently participate in sanctioned events outside of club time.
We suggest interested people plan to register on the opening of day of Strathcona County’s Fall Swimming Registration as the club is a popular program and can fill quickly. Once full, we do recommend waitlisting as we will continue to open more spaces, and accept new members until spaces fill up or we reach the end of October.
