Permits

Building permits (3.3 MB) are required when constructing a new or when replacing an existing deck, when the deck floor is higher than two feet above grade. 

A development permit (363.2 KB) is required when the proposed deck is not in compliance with the current zoning bylaws. Contact us to find out the zoning bylaws for your neighbourhood or for the application requirements. 

You may apply for this permit either online or in person.

Before applying, check that your proposed deck conforms to regulations.

Applying for permits online

Apply for your deck permit and upload required documentation through ePermits.

Required documents include:

• A site plan showing:
  • proposed location of the deck
  • distances to the property lines from the proposed deck
  • existing structures on the property
  • dimensions of the property and proposed deck
  • easements and utility rights-of-way
• An elevation drawing showing length, width and height of deck and rail.

• A  foundation plan which includes the diameter, depth and spacing of piles; direction, type, size and spacing of floor joists; direction, type and size of beams.

Applying for permits in person

Submit the following:

• A completed building permit application form
• A site plan showing:
  • proposed location of the deck
  • distances to the property lines from the proposed deck
  • existing structures on the property
  • dimensions of the property and proposed deck
  • easements and utility rights-of-way
•  An elevation drawing showing length, width and height of deck and rail.
