Mike Derbyshire is a lifelong public servant and community leader dedicated to making Strathcona County a stronger, more resilient, and more connected place to live. He currently serves as Councillor for Ward 2 and has been proud to call the county home for the past 35 years.
With 26 years of experience in policing, Mike built a career rooted in integrity, collaboration, and service. Since retiring from law enforcement, he has continued to give back through community involvement and leadership. For five years, he served as Chair of the Heartland Housing Foundation, helping to expand affordable housing options for residents in Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan. He currently serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club, the Saffron Centre building committee, and as Treasurer of the Edmonton Police Service Veterans Association. Mike has also held several senior executive roles, including Vice President at Servus Credit Union, Vice President at Northlands, and CEO of the Calgary Parking Authority.
Growing up in social housing in Edmonton and as a student of Alberta’s public education system, Mike knows firsthand the impact that well-funded public institutions have on creating opportunity. He also has a special place in his heart for Santa’s Anonymous, where he continues to volunteer after receiving gifts from the organization as a child.
Mike’s approach to leadership is guided by his belief that effective government starts with listening. He is committed to fostering transparent decision-making, building consensus within the community, and ensuring Strathcona County remains a vibrant and welcoming place for all for decades to come.
When he isn’t working, you can find Mike spending time with his family, volunteering with his neighbours, or exploring the county’s incredible parks and paths with his dog, Auddie.
