Characteristics and skills

In order to function effectively in our Communications 9-1-1 Centre, an Emergency Communications Operator should have the following characteristics and skills:

  • An ability to multi-task, rapidly prioritize and manage stress in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Excellent computer and keyboard skills with the ability to adapt to changing technologies.

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively deal with people in person, by telephone or radio, many of whom may be in distress.

  • Personal characteristics of dedication and commitment to duty. ISO-based personal performance standards apply.

Qualifications  

  • Completion of an accredited post secondary Emergency Communications program

  • One year of related experience

  • Assets CPR/AEDRestricted Radio Operators LicenseEmergency Fire Dispatch Certification from the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch
