The Strathcona Wilderness Centre is a year‑round outdoor destination just east of Sherwood Park, offering activities for all ages and abilities. In winter, visitors can enjoy groomed cross‑country ski trails for classic and skate skiing, snowshoeing and walking. In warmer months, the centre features forested hiking trails, picnic areas, camping, wildlife viewing, outdoor fitness equipment, and a 9‑hole disc golf course. Overnight accommodations include a lodge, bunkhouses, cabins and tent rentals, making it easy to extend your visit. The facility also offers rentals, programs and accessible amenities to help make every visit enjoyable.

Hours of operation: Open daily from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

NEW pilot project: Extended ski hours

Skiers can now enjoy evening access from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of ski season.

Wildlife viewing

The forests of black spruce, birch and poplar, along with wetlands, are home to many plants and animals. Explore the spruce bog to spot squirrels and Labrador tea. Moose, white-tailed deer, snowshoe hares, fishers, porcupines and frogs can be seen along the trails. Birds are active year-round, including chickadees, woodpeckers and owls, and migratory species such as Canada geese, ducks, hummingbirds and swallows. Birdwatching and other nature activities are available at the Information Centre.

Bears roam in the area. Learn how to reduce your chances of a bear encounter and what to do if one happens.

Facility accessibility

  • Accessible parking: Four stalls near the Information Centre

  • Ramps: Access to both the Lodge and Information Centre (doors are not automatic)

  • Para Nordic skiing: Equipment rentals and lessons available

  • Accessible trails: 12 km of trails wide enough for sit-skis and visually impaired guests

  • Rest stops: Benches placed along trails for breaks

  • Sidewalk access: Path to the Lodge fire pit
