Avian Influenza Update – October 2026

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been found in a flock in the area. This virus spreads easily and can infect many kinds of birds. Producers should follow strong biosecurity steps and watch for any signs of sickness.

Wild birds —especially waterfowl— can carry the virus, so it can’t be fully kept out of Canada. A good biosecurity plan is still the best way to protect domestic poultry.

For questions, visit Avian influenza in domestic birds | Alberta.ca or call the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian at
