Economic Development and Tourism
Published April 17, 2009
The recent review of Strathcona County's Economic Development and Tourism Department recommended several changes to meet the current needs of our community. The department excels in providing and compiling information, networking with organizations and creating a strategy for Alberta's Industrial Heartland.
The report provided several recommendations, one of which was to identify the needs of the sub-regions within Strathcona County. Each sub-region's uniqueness should be addressed with individualized strategies to create viable economic sub-regions.
I have long promoted the concept of Strathcona County as a community of communities and the need to celebrate and support the individuality of each community. Each hamlet has its own special identity and needs that must be met to provide localized services specific to the people of the area. The "North of Yellowhead" is identified as a sub region within the report. Addressing servicing issues such as water and sewer, having plans in place and coordination of departments within the County to make it far easier to deal with the red tape; maybe even less red tape through simplified procedures, will no doubt be a part of the recommended creation of a strategic plan for the department that aligns with the Strathcona County's Strategic Plan.
It's great to encourage new businesses to locate in Strathcona County but if an investor has to jump over hurdle after hurdle, or if there is a void in what can actually be supported by the municipality, frustration grows and the community gains a reputation of not being business friendly. The Ardrossan transition area directly east of Highway 21 and west of Ardrossan is where decisions have to be made by Council, to advance any development. Now landowners bring forward proposals but because there is a "to be determined" strategy, nothing can proceed. Certainly the Capital Region Board adds another wrinkle to the planning and because of the proximity to major highways, Alberta Transportation's future plans must also be solidified. No wonder people throw up their hands in despair.
Recommendations in the review of Economic Development and Tourism include a reorganization of the department. It was recommended that Recreation, Parks and Culture should take the primary lead in promotion of culture, sports and special events for the County and that Economic Development and Tourism will provide support in marketing.
The department of Economic Development and Tourism will introduce the Country Cuisine: Tomato Fare event at the Great Canadian Trade Fair which runs from April 17th to April 19th. Collateral pieces will be available to the public for promotion of the cuisine event that will be held on Sunday August 12, at the Country Roads Greenhouse in Strathcona County. Other tourism guides that will be available at the trade fair will include the Kalyna Country Magazine, the Visit the Country Guide, and the Sherwood Park visitor's guide.
Our changing community needs changing approaches to meet tomorrows economic and tourism potential.
