My grown-up Christmas list
While driving the other day, I heard a Christmas song. The song, titled above, suggests desirable alternatives to the present state of our world. As we are in the Christmas season, I thought, "why not speculate on the state of our County like the song does to the world."
The state of Strathcona County is far removed from the realities of other parts of the world and judging the County by those standards, we live in a climate of peace and prosperity.
Nevertheless, like the song, I would like to give a 'grown-up Christmas list" for Council, Administration and the People of Strathcona County; so here it goes.
I hope that Council is infused with the courage to change the things we can, accept the things we cannot change, and have the wisdom to know the difference.
I hope that Council has the moral courage to make the "right decisions", not the expedient ones, for the greater good of all the people of the County.
I hope that Council with our diverse personalities, opinions and viewpoints can cast aside those differences for the greater good of all the people of the County.
I hope that Administration has the courage at all times to tell Council when they are wrong and will apply and defend the rights of everyone, regardless of who they are, without fear, favour or affection.
I hope that the citizens of Strathcona County will, every day of the year, manifest the qualities evident at Christmas - kindness, patience, tolerance, acceptance, and understanding for their neighbours. We have the capacity to embrace all those characteristics at all times of the year. Would not the County be a more wonderful place if we did?
I also hope that we will all contemplate the true meaning of the celebration of the Christmas season. Over 2000 years ago God sent his only son Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Saviour. His message of hope, love, charity and forgiveness, if applied each and every day, would transform our lives and those around us.
Christmas is a wonderful time of year, where we renew ourselves as families and extend our generosity to each other and bask in the warm glow of family times. To each and every person I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. May the New Year be filled with joy, hope, peace, happiness and prosperity.
