Municipal Development Plan - be informed

Published May 3, 2006

By far, the most crucial decision Council will have to make this year is in regards to the new Municipal Development Plan (MDP). This broad and overarching document is designed to plan the future development of the County. Saying that coming to a decision on this matter will be a challenge is perhaps an understatement. This document will not only impact the residents of today, but also future generations.

In the past year, open houses have been held, web comment lines have been established and the Mayor and all Councillors have received considerable input from a substantial number of residents on a variety of points. To date the majority of mail and electronic mail I have received centers on the future growth node in the Colchester area, as well as the proposed horticultural zone on the south side of Highway 16 just east of Sherwood Park.

In a number of instances people have told me, in person or though letters and e-mails, that they were not aware that the MDP was being developed. During the past year, Administration has placed many advertisements in the local newspapers about the MDP as well as advertising open houses. The MDP has also been the subject of many news articles and letters to the editor.

The entire proposed MDP is on the County Website at www.strathcona.ab.ca. I would strongly urge all those interested to view the document and ascertain what changes are proposed. Some of these changes could have considerable impact on you, dependent on where your land is situated.

I know that the Mayor and all Councillors are eager to hear from you, the residents, on this issue. Once a decision has been made, it will be too late to say you did not know about it. Strathcona County is a unique community, with many fine attributes and we must take care to protect those attributes. It is important that our future growth meets the social, economic and environmental needs of the community.

That Council can and will make a decision on the matter is a foregone conclusion. We need to be informed to the best degree possible. It is only you that can inform us. Come that moment in time Council has to make the decision, we will make it with the best information and evidence available to us. It is your input that will allow us to make the best decision possible. I strongly encourage you to let your voice be heard.
