Update on cell phone ban
Published April 11, 2008
I would first like to talk about the recently passed motion by Council on the cell phone ban. The motion passed by Council reads as follows:
That Council authorize Administration to proceed to collect public input into the proposed bylaw as set out in the Communication Plan enclosed as Enclosure IV and report back to Council.
I do not understand how this can be misinterpreted as a study. The research has already been done and was given to Council as part of this report. I voted that I needed as much public input as possible before I made any decision. While there are a number of residents who have already given me their input and their input is important, I also believe it is imperative we hear from as many of our people as possible. Remember our Council members must reflect the views of all our residents, not just their own or a few members of our public. I of course will, on top of this, knock on approximately 500 doors in my own Ward as past practice to hear directly their view point on this very important issue.
The next topic I would like to broach is our recently passed Waste Management Plan. This Plan is the most aggressive endeavour of this community's vision to eliminate sending our refuse to landfills as much as possible. While I am a strong supporter of recycling, I also am very cautious concerning how we will implement and support this new endeavour. I believe it will take a concerted effort by our residents, our waste contractor and the Utilities Department to successfully culminate the project. I see that constant communication and monitoring by all these parties is needed to ensure all the "quirks" which will arise are dealt with in a timely and professional manner. While I am cautious, I am also optimistic. I am convinced this project is needed to offset the perception that we as a society do not care about the future or do not think about the future our children and grandchildren will inherit. I want their future to be as bright as mine and so will do whatever is needed to accomplish that goal.
