Power line issue

Published June 13, 2008

As the transportation utility corridor (green space) runs adjacent to the west boundary of my ward, I believe it is imperative the residents who border the corridor, and as well, the remainder of the residents in Sherwood Park are made aware of some possible future developments. I believe electrical transmissions affect all of us in some way and especially those who are in close proximity to the lines.

The latest information from the Alberta Electric System Operator ("AESO") is as follows:

The AESO has identified a need for the development of transmission facilities to support growing demand in the Heartland area. The AESO intended to file a needs identification document (the first of two stages in the regulatory process) with the Alberta Utilities Commission in April 2008; however, due to public concerns the AESO has decided to file these needs identification documents at the same time as Step 2 is completed, namely in October 2009. Step 2 consists of the transmission facility owners' preparing and submitting a facilities application with the Alberta Utilities Commission seeking regulatory approval of the specific technical and siting aspects of the transmissions reinforcement.

The AESO while slowing the process down has indicated there are only two options that will be put forth. The first is an "east side double-circuit 500/240 kilovolt ("KV") which is the preferred action. The second is a viable west side double-circuit 500 KV. Both of these options will be exploring route options both inside and outside the existing transportation utility corridors located around the City of Edmonton which includes the one adjacent to Sherwood Park.

I believe we must be diligent about this possibility and to that end would entertain any suggestions as to how we should approach this possibility. The Operator is presently planning to have an information session for public input in Sherwood Park on June 18th at the Best Western Hotel. We need your attendance and input.
