Street sweeping usually begins in mid to late April, when all the snow has melted off streets, boulevards, yards and properties and overnight temperatures are consistently above freezing.

Street sweeping cleans up all the sand, dirt and rock chips left on the street from the winter season.

What to expect

Signs will be placed in your area before street sweeping is scheduled for your specific neighbourhood.

The sweepers will make several passes to clear the roadway. They start near the curb and slowly work their way into the centre of the road (similar to a Zamboni) in order to pick up all of the material.

It takes sweepers approximately four to five weeks to clear arterial roads and residential roads in Sherwood Park and Ardrossan.

County crews sweep rural hamlets (Antler Lake, Collingwood Cove, Half Moon Lake, Hastings Lake, Josephburg, North Cooking Lake and South Cooking Lake), country residential and rural grid roads; this is a longer process that can take up until the end of June.

Prepare for sweeping

  • Watch for signs with dates for sweeping in your area. These are posted at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Move any parked cars. You won’t get a ticket or towed for leaving your car on the road – but the road won’t get as clean if you do.
  • Sweep any dirt or debris on your driveway or sidewalk into the gutter in advance.
  • Remove rubber driveway mats and any other on-street obstructions (basketball nets, waste collection carts, etc.)
  • If street sweeping occurs on your waste collection day, please place your roll-out cart at the end of your driveway and not on the road or sidewalk.
  • Do not park on the street until the signs at the neighbourhood entrances have been removed.

Watch for the signs!
