Hints to properly prepare recyclables
Preparing your recyclables is an important step when Getting with the Green Routine.
Here are some helpful hints when preparing your recyclables:
For paper and paper products
- Flatten all cardboard boxes and ensure pieces are no larger than 0.3 m x 1 m (1 foot x 3 feet). This is because the compartment in the trucks can only accommodate this size or smaller. If cardboard can't be folded down to these dimensions, please bring it to a recycle station.
- If it's very windy on your collection day, use a reusable container such as your old garbage can. This will eliminate the potential of your bag blowing away. You can also place your container recycling (collected in the clear blue plastic bag) on top of your paper recycling to help prevent paper from escaping. You could also hang on to your recycling and put it out the following week.
- The reusable container that you collect paper in should not weigh more than 25 kg (50 lbs.) when full. Cardboard boxes are not acceptable to use as a container. Haulers must lift these containers and dump them into the appropriate compartment. Lifting containers more than 25 kg is dangerous for the hauler. If you have more paper product, please use a second reusable container like an old garbage can or fibre bag.
For container recyclables
- Rinse all containers before placing them in a blue bag for collection. Dirty recyclable containers will contaminate the recycling process which will result in the recyclables going to landfill.
-
Mix heavier recyclable containers, such as glass, with the lighter containers, such as plastic. This will help reduce the chance of your container recycling from blowing away.
