Sustainable Strathcona

The community energy system is an integral part of truly being a sustainable community.

This system operates at 85 per cent efficiency whereas individual commercial grade systems run at 65 per cent. Operating at 85 per cent efficiency will reduce greenhouse gases by 1,100 tonnes or 18 per cent per year when compared to conventional heating methods.

The energy system is an important part of Centre in the Park and reflects its commitment to sustainable development.

This system will be used as a model of sustainable development for future projects and policy development in Strathcona County.

The system was designed with a forward looking approach, in other words planning now for changes to come in the future.

Natural gas is heating the system initially. If in the future another fuel proves more economical or better from an environmental point of view, the fuel source can be switched. Possible future fuels could potentially include municipal waste, bio-fuels, hydrogen and surplus heat from an industrial source in Strathcona County. This will not only allow for further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, but the system may then also be able to use local fuel.

Community learning

The Community Energy Centre will serve as an educational tool. An area in the Centre will be dedicated entirely to public education. It will be used to promote environmental awareness initiatives in the County including recycling, water conservation and waste minimization.

Public tours will be given to educate residents on the benefits of the community energy, how it works and how it can be applied in other areas of the community.
