Station #6 - expected opening early 2013

Strathcona County's newest fire station, expected to open in early 2013, will be located at 915 Bison Way, Sherwood Park, next to the RCMP station.

In addition to being fully operational, Fire Station #6 will serve as a training facility for Strathcona County fire fighters and home base for the management team, administrative team, Emergency Management, Fire Prevention and Investigation and Occupational Health Safety and Training. A minimum of seven Fire Fighter - EMT/Paramedics and Officers will work each shift.

Unique features of the LEED silver standard fire station will include:

  • training/hose tower (4.5 stories and a basement) for training purposes
  • deluge/decontamination shower (with collection system)
  • secured evidence room for fire investigations
  • dedicated space for public safety training, including first aid and CPR classes
  • building design that complements neighbouring architecture, while still capturing traditional aspects of a fire station appearance

The construction of Fire Station #6 is in response to emergency call volumes increasing by seven to ten per cent annually. With the new fire station, response times will shorten and give emergency responders the extra few minutes that can make a difference in saving a life.

The budget for the design, land, building and vehicles is approximately $20.8 million, and just over half of the funding came from the Alberta government's Municipal Sustainability Initiative grant.
