Give your role model a High Five!

March 9, 2010

To the young people of our community —

The children and youth of Strathcona County are invited to nominate their heroes for the 2010 High Five Awards. Anyone from age five to 18 can make a nomination. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2010.

The High Five Awards focus on developmental assets, which are qualities and experiences that young people need to grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible.

“Now in its third year, High Five was developed to recognize the adults who have made a difference in the lives of children and youth in the community,” says Mayor Cathy Olesen. “It is a great privilege to meet and honour the individuals who mean so much to the County’s younger population.”

Nominees can be a family member, teacher, coach, spiritual leader, or any adult who has been a mentor. Nominations are accepted in four award categories based on the age of the nominee: Kindergarten to Grade 3, Grades 4 to 6, Grades 7 to 9, and Grades 10 to 12. One adult in each category is selected for an award; and all of the nominees will be recognized at the ceremony, which will be held on June 7, 2010 at Festival Place.

Nomination forms are available at various schools and some community venues. An online form can also be found at www.strathcona.ca. Residents can call 780-464-4044 for more information.

Last year the Youth Council collected over 350 nominations from children and youth all over Strathcona County. This year, they hope to collect even more nominations.

The High Five Awards is an initiative of the Strathcona County Youth Council and Strathcona County Family and Community Services. The Youth Council is comprised of junior and senior high school students from the County who meet regularly to discuss and identify various youth issues while working hard to achieve a better future for the youth of Strathcona County. They spend much of their time volunteering and demonstrating the positive impact and roles that youth can have in the community.
