Changes to utility rates

Effective January 1, 2020, there will be some changes in the water and wastewater costs on residents' monthly utility bills. Overall, the average household will have an increase of $3.19 per month or $38.28 per year. Each of the charges is explained briefly.

Current utility rates vary depending on several factors including location and type of service. Detailed rate information is in the Fees and Charges schedule under Your Council & County.

Water rates

Water - flat charge
This covers the water meter, monthly billing and maintenance of fire hydrants. Some residents will see a $1.10 increase on their bills. This is for the Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission for the maintenance upgrading and eventual replacement of their pipeline system.

Water - metered
The 2020 rate includes an increase due to a small increase to purchase water from EPCOR as well as inflation on operations. The actual cost for each household will depend on the volume of water used. For a household using 14.5 cubic metres of water per month, this will mean an increase of $2.03 per month.

You can control some of the costs by following some simple water conservation practices.

Water - truck fills
For residents who purchase water from the Sherwood Park, Ardrossan or South Cooking Lake truck fill stations, the rate has increased by $0.05 per cubic metre. This increase is due to higher costs set by EPCOR to purchase water as well as inflation on operations.

Wastewater rates

Sewer - residential treatment
This charge reflects the cost of sewage treatment at the Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission Treatment Plant. This charge is based on the amount of water consumed by each household. For a household using 14.5 cubic metres of water per month, this will mean an increase of $1.16 per month.
