Youth Council projects and activities

Youth Council leads community project to nourish both body and mind

Commencing May 5, 2017, Youth Council members are working with the community to provide those in need with 24/7 access to food and literature through a new free community pantry and book exchange.

Results of the recent Community Talk public engagement indicate that the most important social goal is to ensure all people in Strathcona County have their basic needs met (including affordability). This Youth Council led initiative is another collaborative step towards achieving this goal.

Housed in weatherproof boxes in front of the Community Centre (2001 Sherwood Drive, Sherwood Park), the community pantry and book exchange are part of the Youth Council’s initiative to reduce barriers to accessing food.

In a spirit of true community care, residents and local businesses are invited to donate non-perishable food items or small toiletries and family-friendly books either directly into the boxes, or by dropping off donations at the Family and Community Services office, located at 200, 501 Festival Avenue (second floor of the Community Centre). Special thanks to the Strathcona County Professional Fire Fighter Association and the Strathcona Food Bank for providing initial food donations.

Youth Council members will monitor the success of this pilot project, as well as ensure the community pantry and book exchange remains stocked.

Youth Friendly Business Committee

Strathcona County Youth Council proudly presented Nitza’s Pizza with the 2016 Youth Friendly Business Award. Nitza’s Pizza was selected for this award based on their respect for youth customers, consideration of youth employees and their efforts in giving back to the community. Congratulations Nitza’s Pizza (and thanks for letting us make our own pizza pies!)

 Congratulations to Nitza's Pizza
